Jell-o
Maggie's teacher received an interesting birthday present today. At breakfast, Maggie determined she needed:
A card,
with a picture,
and Jell-o, "Some of the kind we had for dinner last night in the fridge".
Thankfully, we finished up the green Jell-o the night before. Disappointment faded as she raided the pantry. So, she taped the card to a box of fusion berry Jell-o.
Her teacher probably thinks we are nuts. Speaking of nuts, I wonder how those would taste in Jell-o...

Mingling
This just in!
Apostate unaccountable children mingle hymns with Bon Jovi and others!
So, there may be some downsides to using Lego Rockband to help the children develop a sense of rhythm and pitch.
Running through the hall goes Tim singing:
"Shot through the heart! and you're to blame, you give love... a bad name... cause..." (tune change) "Jesus wants me for a sun-BEAM!... (tune change) "What's that coming over the hill, is it a monster? Is it a monster?"
Down the hall Maggie is singing the chorus to Blink 182's Aliens exist while Ami is harmonizing with "I am a child of God"... except that she has got one part of the song wrong...
"And He has sent me ears" (as opposed to the curriculum approved, He has sent me here).
I guess we'll have to wait for the Millennium for Rock Band: Hymnbook to come out. Til then...

Twitchy Little Cougar
It's the most wonderful time of the year! March Madness is upon us again. This year's family picks reflect the level of interest and serious nature of the selection process.
David - Two years ago, he produced a bracket that took 70th place, out of over 18 million entries, only to be thwarted by his 17 year old sister and 5 year old daughter last year. This year his picks reflect trust in defense, experienced big men and quick guard play.
Melissa - Picked the teams that were the easiest and fastest to write. David was less than pleased.
Maggie - Based decisions on 1) team / cheerleader uniforms 2) rank 3) familiarity. "Since BYU has the most modest cheerleader outfits, they will win because God is on their side, right Dad?" "Only eternally darling, only eternally."
Tim - Completely random.
Ami - Whichever team was easier to say.
Susanna - We would read two teams. If the right arm twitched first, the first team got choosen, if the left arm twitched first, the second team, if she fell asleep, she got a cold hand to the back of the neck, and that would cover about 7 or 8 more picks of twitching. Amazingly, (not joking) she ended up picking BYU to lose in the final to Texas A & M. hm...
Let the games begin. Now how much sick leave have we saved up? ...

Dr. Suess
Did you know his birthday is celebrated March 2nd? Maggie let us know that. She had the option of wearing pajamas or her Cat In the Hat outfit for school. She opted for the outfit and appropriately dressed her little sister in the matching attire. Tim wanted his own, too, but we don't have one for him. Sorry kiddo.

Random baby experiences
Some of the adventures Susanna has brought to the family:
- Tim caught a wiff of the smells of having a new baby, and immediately hurled. His comment was priceless: "It smelled so bad my food had to jump out of my stomach."
- Susanna will smile at everyone but Dad (and he's nice to her - really!)
- When the the new home teachers showed up, the children were excited to tell them about our new addition... a new table. We pointed out we also have a new baby. The response by Maggie, spoken with true apathy, "Oh yea, we got her too."
- She still refuses to stay on a schedule for more than 3 days.

Family Fun Night
It's been a fun week with Nannie here. She pulled out a fun activity for the kids last night - Big punch balloons. Amirrah's fun and laughter with her balloon was contagious. We couldn't help but laugh with her.
After some time with the balloons, we moved to the theater for our family activity - LEGO Rockband. Maggie rocked on the mic, David was amazing as always on the guitar. Nannie, Tim and Melissa took turns on the drums. Hmmm. Needless to say, there were no 5 star performances. Even on easy drum pieces, it just didn't happen. I guess everyone will have to practice more.

Another Reader
Back in June 2007, we had a POST about Magdalyn's reading goal.
Now Tim has met his reading goal. Again, we have used "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons." He's only on lesson 76 but his reading has become accomplished to the point that he can read the scriptures without help on most of the words.
He struggles to sit still with the small print of regular scriptures so last month Melissa bought a large print Triple and he has excelled with it.
So Friday before Susanna's 2 week appointment, Tim got to choose his own new scriptures. The 8 1/2" x 11" copy he's started using is a bit big for taking to church each week so we went with the middle size - larger than the average set but smaller than the 8 1/2 x 11. Of the black, green, brown and maroon option he had, (David has blue in that size so it's not an option for him) he went for the green.
We also bought him a carrying case that has a shoulder strap to help him with the added weight of the bigger set. And of course, he got some scripture marking crayons. He started at the beginning of the Book of Mormon a few months ago reading 2-3 verses every day so he just picked up from there in the new set and started marking right away.
Now Amirrah is anxious to do reading lessons, too. She can identify and tell the sounds of a few letters but has a ways to go before we fork out for her scriptures.
